Co-founder and Chairman

Distinguished Professor Loh is Co-founder and Chairman of SINGAPORE SCIENCES and SINOAGRO GROUP.

A practising plant scientist, Professor Loh is one of the early pioneering bio-entrepreneurs in Singapore who successfully established the commercial application of biological and molecular techniques to plant and crop improvements in the agro-based industries in the ASEAN region. In 1979 to 1984, he was engaged as Horticulturist to implement horticultural and landscaping work for the world’s largest palace (Istana Nurul Iman, Brunei), managing the regional sourcing, nursery propagation, and landscaping of its landmark 280-acre estate (Abstract from Booth, H.S. 1984, Testimonial for H.M. LOH). Professor Loh’s career has spanned almost three (3) decades across both the academic and corporate world, with numerous distinguished appointments and roles as professor, chairman and advisor for a range of institutions and organisations.

He is an alumnus of the world-renowned Rothamsted Experimental Station (estb. in 1843) United Kingdom and obtaining his advanced doctoral research training under the tutelage of the late Sir Leslie Fowden, FRS and the late Leverhulme Trust Distinguished Professor Edward C. Cocking, FRS in the 1990’s. Professor Loh belongs to a generation of scholar-practitioners and although trained in the classical plant sciences but his contributions were substantial and characterised by the interdisciplinary application of intersecting academic portfolio with interoperability involving innovative translational bio-technologies, agri-food biosecurity, cross-border strategic development and organisation governance in the ASEAN region.

Professor Loh filed a joint patent application in the United States titled “Method of Making a Red Yeast Rice Extract” (US Patent Application: US61/167543). This specific breakthrough focused on plant extracts containing natural statins and optimization techniques, matching his core profile as a pioneer in commercializing biological and molecular techniques for health and agro-based industries. The findings and novel discoveries related to this patent were accepted and published in March 2012 in Scientific Reports, which is a highly regarded peer-reviewed journal under the Nature Portfolio (Nature.com).

In November 2024, he is conferred the prestigious inaugural title of Singapore Distinguished Professor by Murdoch University, Australia in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of plant sciences and related disciplines, including achievements in bio-innovation, entrepreneurship, research & development and industry collaboration. In November 2025, he is appointed a Technical Committee Member of Complementary Medicine and Health Products-Singapore Standards Committee, EnterpriseSG to support and promotion of the internationalisation of the Singapore Standards (ISO).
